Engaging in Comparative Effectiveness and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research: Beginner Series

Credit Hours: 5.0  |   Fee: $249.00

Comparative effectiveness research (CER) and patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) are now an integral part of the health care landscape. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute’s (PCORI) national research roadmap includes CER-PCOR methods development; the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is expanding CER-PCOR infrastructure; and the Food and Drug Administration has implemented the Patient-Focused Drug Development Initiative. This heightened attention on CER-PCOR promotes the inclusion of the patient in most aspects of health care research, decision-making, and dissemination.

This online series will prepare health care providers, policy-makers, patient groups and industry with the growing body of CER-PCOR knowledge and will present opportunities to leverage CER-PCOR to improve health care and patient outcomes.

Established in 2014, the Patient-Centered Research for Outcomes, Effectiveness, and Measurement (PROEM) Center of Excellence in the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy develops, improves, and disseminates practitioner training in CER-PCOR. PROEM is one of six U.S. centers initially funded by the Pharmaceutical Research Manufacturers Association (PhRMA) Foundation to expand graduate education and training programs across the nation. Training includes intensive summer institutes and innovative online programs.

This PROEM-inspired five-hour series on the fundamentals of CER-PCOR will increase learners’ ability to understand and enter this burgeoning field.

Four online, self-paced modules will introduce learners to the core concepts, essential elements, principles of CER-PCOR and will explore its evolution in the health care landscape. Our robust, online learning environment is designed to engage learners through interactive exercises.

Learning Objectives
After completing this series, the participant should be able to:
  1. Describe the emergence of comparative effectiveness research and patient-centered outcomes research (CER-PCOR) and their implications for health care;
  2. Identify and explain the core principles and fundamentals of comparative effectiveness research and patient-centered outcomes research;
  3. Assess the strengths and limitations of randomized controlled trials versus CER study designs;
  4. Construct a strategy for conducting a CER-PCOR study using the critical elements of patient and stakeholder engagement; and
  5. Discuss the implications of heterogeneity of treatment effect (HTE) in CER-PCOR and reflect on how HTE can affect health care decisions in your work setting.
