Counseling Patients at the Point of Dispensing: Requirements & Best Practices

Counseling for Medicare and dual-eligible Medicaid patients is required at the time of dispensing under certain conditions and with certain medications. This one hour module will acquaint learners with specific requirements for counseling, will define and sequence the steps in patient medication counseling, and will share best practices. This session will provide audiovisual case examples to illustrate the practice of counseling.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this course, the physician participant should be able to:
- Identify the state and federal requirements for patient counseling during the in-office dispensing process;
- Correctly identify the components and sequence the steps in delivery of medication counseling;
- When viewing an audiovisual interaction with the patient, determine key counseling points to be provided to a patient; and
- Recall at minimum two best practices in the medication counseling process.

The Physician Dispensing in Maryland Series
This series Physician Dispensing in Maryland is an educational collaboration between MedChi The Maryland State Medical Society and The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.
The purpose of the Physician Dispensing in Maryland Educational Series is to:
- Promote consistency and high quality dispensing of prescription medications in all settings in Maryland; and
- Support dispensing physicians in successful completion of the requirements for a permit under Maryland Law.

Successful completion requires the learner to complete all practice based activity components including the audiovisual presentations, post-test, and Activity Evaluation. Participants must receive a score of at least 70% on the post-test in order to receive credit. The post-test may be taken up to three (3) times.
